How to come to Italy for medical treatment

Question: My nephew who lives in Pakistan is sick and I would like to bring him to Italy for medical treatment because the doctors in Pakistani say they don’t have the required facilities to treat him. What should I do?

Answer: Your nephew can come to Italy for treatment, but he must first of all go to the Italian Embassy in Pakistan to apply for visa for medical treatment.

The first thing you should do is to ask your nephew to send you all the medical certificates, translated into Italian.

You can then take these medical certificates to a public or private hospital operating in agreement with the National Health Scheme so that they can evaluate the case. After examining the case, the hospital will issue you a report indicating the type of medical treatment to be carried out.

The report will also indicate the date the treatment should begin and the presumed duration of treatment, and the costs.

Your nephew will be able to apply for visa for medical treatment as well as another visa for the person accompanying and taking care of him.

You should be informed that the patient will have to bear all the medical expenses. In fact at the time of applying for the visa, he’ll be required to prove that he has deposited at least 30% of the medical fee to the hospital.

Either your nephew or someone else in case he is unable, must go to the Italian Embassy to apply for the visa for medical treatment. The applicant will be required to show the report from the hospital indicating the type of medical treatment to be carried out, the date the treatment should begin, the presumed duration of treatment, and the costs.

He’ll also be required to prove that he has deposited at least 30% of the medical fee to the hospital, in addition to proving that he has enough financial means to bear all the medical expenses, food and accommodation, and travel expenses both for himself and the person accompanying him.

Once in Italy, your nephew will be issued a Permit of Stay for medical treatment valid throughout the period of treatment. This permit is renewable as long as it can be proved that the treatment continues.

You should also be informed that there is another possibility of coming to Italy for medical treatment through humanitarian programmes authorized by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Medical expenses incurred by the hospitals in such cases are reimbursed by the National Health Scheme through Regional authorities.

Normally Regional authorities, in agreement with the Ministry of Health and hospitals, authorize highly specialised medical treatments to people from non-EU countries where there are poor medical facilities or where there are no specialist medical staff to carry out certain treatments.

These humanitarian interventions are authorized in case of specific serious pathologies in countries with no reciprocal medical agreements with Italy, or to citizens from countries who’s economic, political, military or any other situation, make it difficult to implement the existing medical agreements with the Italian National Health Scheme.

It is important for you to find out if your nephew’s sickness may qualify him for medical treatment through humanitarian programmes. Please check with the chosen hospital.
