23,000 illegal domestic workers regularised

Only 1000 applications for regularization have so far been rejected,

22nd December 2009: Latest report from Ministry of Home Affairs shows that 23,000 illegal domestic workers who applied to be regularised have made it. The Provincial Police Headquarters have examined about a third of the applications and only rejected 1%. The following cases are being denied clearance: Those who had been expelled from Italy for security reasons, public order or terrorism, those who have been earmarked as non admissible to Italy, as well those who have been condemned, even if not definitely, for crimes requiring being caught red handed.

Once the applications have been cleared by the Provincial Police Headquarters, the employers and the workers are summoned to the Immigrations Office at the Prefecture to verify if the information declared in the application form is true. If this is the case, they then proceed to undersign the residency contract.

So far, 55,000 summoning letters have been sent to employers, but less than a half of these have showed up at the Immigrations Office at the Prefecture.

Only 1000 applications for regularization have been rejected, while some 5,000 employers have been asked to submit more documents in support of their applications. If they fail to do so, their applications will also be rejected.
