Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) has called for a
serious commitment to put in place the European asylum system.
The deadline for the adoption of the legislative package for the creation of a Common European Asylum System, set for 2012 by the Stockholm Programme, is rapidly approaching.
ALDE yesterday held a seminar Brussels, Belgium in order to reflect upon possible ways of having more common responsibilities and burden-sharing in the EU asylum system.
Nadja Hirsch from Germany said: "Given the crisis of asylum systems within the EU and the shortcomings of the Dublin-II scheme, it is high time to think about innovative ways - such as for instance the introduction of a European distribution key- which could lead to a fairer allocation of asylum-seekers among Member States. We cannot construct a Common European Asylum System if we deny our common responsibility for the people who seek refuge here."
The establishment of a sound Common European Asylum System based on solidarity and responsibility has always been one of the priorities of the ALDE group.
Vice-chairperson of the Civil liberties committee Sophie in't Veld from the Netherlands said: "Member States, instead of paying lip-service only, should show real commitment to complete the European asylum system. Emphasis should be put on equal chances to be admitted to the EU and a fair burden sharing with regard to asylum seekers among the Member States."
